we arrived in vernazza sweaty & tired after our hike; we could barely wait to get to the beach for some sunbathing & sea-frolicking. the water was cooler than expected so after a refreshing splash i located a huge, warm rock to serve as my deck chair while i continued ‘the beautiful & the damned‘. later, we enjoyed a harbour-side seafood dinner, accompanied by yet more wine, of course.

in my opinion manarola is the prettiest of all the five villages that comprise the cinque terre. we spent the night here, gorging on seafood & gelato, before taking a short train journey straight through the mountains to corniglia (where we filled-up on yet more gnocchi & i bought the sweetest lemon-scented soaps, currently residing in my lingerie drawer). then we hiked the 4km/2.5 miles to vernazza, which is next up!
we began our cinque terre adventure in riomaggiore. we’d planned to hike the whole of the route but the prettiest part, the coastal path, was closed all the way to corniglia. luckily we had a fun alternative option, catching the ferry to our first overnight pit-stop. next up, manarola!
ah florence, you more than make up for pisa! we enjoyed 3 days of cobbled street exploration, unphotographably perfect sunsets & the best gnocchi of our lives (plus copious amounts of chianti & gelato). i bought the softest leather belt on earth & am still regretting leaving behind the most reasonably-priced leather sandals. an excuse for to book visit number 4…?
having previously been to (& been disappointed by) pisa it isn’t somewhere i’d planned to visit again, however seeing as our recent italian adventure began with flights into the city it made sense to de-tour so that he could see the leaning tower, if nothing else. did it win me over this time? sadly i once again found it to be underwhelming & overexpensive. still, onto florence!
